GRADUATE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Entrance Requirements
Admission to the University is administered under policies established
by state law, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher
Learning, and the University's faculty. Admission requirements are
subject to change without notice at the direction of the Board of
Trustees.
Admission to the Graduate School is determined by the dean of the
Graduate School after evaluation and approval of credentials and
recommendation by the faculty of the academic discipline concerned.
The Graduate School at The University of Mississippi recognizes the
necessity of using multiple criteria in making the admission decision.
These criteria include an applicant’s previous academic performance
and scores on standardized tests and may include research and
practical experiences, evidence of skill (e.g. writing sample), letter
of recommendation, and, in the case of applicants whose native
language is not English, scores on an English proficiency exam such as
the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International
English Language Testing System (IELTS).
Students may apply for admission before a baccalaureate degree is
completed but may not enroll as a graduate student until the
baccalaureate degree is conferred. Meeting minimum standards does not
guarantee admission to a degree program. The selection process is
competitive, and admission decisions take into consideration the
availability of space and resources within a department. To assure
full consideration for admission, all application materials must be
received by the deadline dates.
Applicants for graduate admission should have at least a B average in
previous university/college studies and appropriate undergraduate
preparation in their fields of study. Students should also possess or
be in the process of completing a baccalaureate degree or equivalent.
Applicants for master’s and Ph.D programs in most disciplines should
submit official test results of the general Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
prior to consideration for admission. Applicants for graduate study in
business and accountancy are required to submit official results of
the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Applicants should
request that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) send official test
scores directly to the Graduate School. The university code number is
1840.
While GRE is sufficient for most academic disciplines, some academic
departments require other standardized test scores as part of their
application process. For example, some departments in the School of
Education require the Praxis Exam. Please check the School of
Education web site for this information
http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/educ_school2/.
Requirements for Transfer Students
In addition to the above requirements, transfer students from U.S.
institutions must submit a completed School Transfer Eligibility Form
(STEF). This form can be found at:
School Transfer Eligibility Form
Language Requirements – TOEFL & IELTS Exams
All applicants whose native language is not English are required to
submit official scores received from either the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing
System (IELTS).
TOEFL & IELTS will not be required if the graduate school applicant
has studied in a U.S. institution for 8 consecutive semesters (4
years). Neither the TOEFL nor the IELTS admission requirement will be waived if the applicant has been previously enrolled in an English as a Second Language or Intensive English Program.
TOEFL results can be reported through the Educational Testing Service
(ETS) HERE. Student applicants must request that the TOEFL
testing center send the results to the Graduate School at the
university. TOEFL test scores will be automatically sent without extra
cost to the Graduate School if, during testing, the student writes The
University of Mississippi’s four-digit code (1840) in the space
provided on the TOEFL test answer sheet. Please note the following
restrictions:
Full admission will be granted with the following TOEFL score:
Internet Based (IB) 79-80, Computer Based (CB) 213, or Paper Based
(PB) 550 (Some departments require higher results).
Students whose score falls below will be required
to enter the English As A Second Language Program prior to academic
enrollment. Once an acceptable TOEFL result has been submitted and all
other admission requirements are met, the student can be enrolled in
the academic program of the university.
All students with TOEFL scores of IB 79-80 to 99, CB 213 to 249, and
PB 550 to 599 will be re-tested with The University of Mississippi
English Placement Test prior to registration to determine if the
student must enroll in the special English course (EFS-100) during
their first semester of enrollment.
IELTS results can be reported through by IELTS – English for
International Opportunity http://www.ielts.org/default.aspx
Please note the following restrictions:
Full admission will be granted with an IELTS score of 6.
Students whose score falls below will be required to enter the
English As A Second Language Program prior to academic enrollment.
Once an acceptable IELTS or TOEFL result has been submitted and all
other admission requirements are met, the student can be enrolled in
the academic program of the university.
All students with IELTS scores of 6 - 7 will be re-tested with The
University of Mississippi English Placement Test prior to registration
to determine if the student must enroll in the special English course
(EFS-100) during their first semester of enrollment.
